The Senate Standing Committee on Finance expressed serious concern over the Finance Division’s inability to account for Rs. 3.3 billion in unclarified funds. During a heated session, senators questioned the lack of transparency and demanded a detailed breakdown of how the funds were used.
Committee members said the Finance Division had failed to provide satisfactory answers despite multiple requests. They emphasized that such lapses weaken public trust and hinder effective fiscal management.
The senators also pointed out that unaccounted funds could signal deep administrative flaws and called for a comprehensive audit. Officials from the Finance Division assured the committee that the data would be submitted soon but did not specify a timeline.
Chairperson of the committee criticized the absence of senior officials from the meeting, calling it an insult to parliamentary oversight. The committee also urged the government to strengthen financial reporting mechanisms to ensure accountability in future allocations.
The incident underscores growing concerns over fiscal discipline and transparency in Pakistan’s public finance system. Lawmakers are now pushing for stronger audit controls and stricter monitoring to prevent misuse of public money.
