The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to the Sindh government, Karachi Commissioner, KMC, and other relevant parties over the Gul Plaza fire case.
The court heard petitions related to the tragic fire at Gul Plaza shopping mall. A detailed report from the Karachi Commissioner has been summoned regarding the incident, which claimed multiple lives.
โGul Plaza Shopping Mall has been a busy commercial centre of Karachi,โ said the petitionerโs lawyer. โSeveral human lives were lost in this tragic fire.โ
The petitioner requested the court to fix responsibility for the tragedy and take action against the authorities involved. Counsel Nadeem Shaikh emphasized that the incident highlighted the โineligibility of the concerned departments.โ
The petitioner also urged the court to direct authorities to assess the total losses from the Gul Plaza fire case and take steps to compensate victims and their families.
The fire broke out at Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road around 10:00 P.M. on January 17. It took 34 hours to bring the blaze under control, leaving several people dead and others missing. The massive fire has left the city in shock and raised questions about fire safety in commercial areas.
Authorities have faced criticism for delays in fire response and insufficient safety measures. The Gul Plaza fire case has sparked demands for stricter inspections of commercial buildings to prevent similar disasters in the future.
The SHCโs intervention is expected to ensure accountability and proper compensation for victims. Lawyers and petitioners stressed that the case should set a precedent for improving safety standards across Karachi.
Investigations into the fireโs cause and the response of the concerned authorities are ongoing. Citizens and families of the victims are awaiting updates from the court on accountability and compensation measures.
