Station Head Officer (SHO) Zain Abbas has been suspended over allegations of torturing the husband of a woman who, along with her toddler, fell into an open manhole in Bhatti Gate, Lahore.
DIG Operations Lahore ordered immediate action after reports emerged that the husband was detained and allegedly subjected to torturing by the SHO. A show-cause notice has also been issued to the concerned DSP.
Investigations will review the role of the City SP and other police officials in the incident. The DIG Operations has asked the Internal Accountability Branch (IAB) to conduct an independent inquiry into the matter.
The inquiry will examine why the husband and his brother were taken into custody. It will also assess why arrests were made during the rescue operation and why police responded in this manner.
A Lahore Police spokesperson assured that strict action would be taken against any officer found guilty of misconduct, including torturing suspects.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night when a mother and her daughter fell into an open manhole near Bhatti Gate. Rescue 1122 teams conducted hours-long search operations before retrieving the bodies.
Officials said the manhole was left open due to ongoing construction near the Data Darbar Birds Market. The tragedy raised serious questions about safety measures and the response of local authorities.
Police sources confirmed that the suspension and inquiry aim to ensure accountability and prevent misuse of authority. Families and local residents have demanded swift action and better safety protocols.
This case highlights growing concerns over law enforcement practices, including reports of torturing during custody. Authorities have promised full transparency and timely updates as investigations proceed.
