The Sindh government has announced plans to introduce e-challan system in the Food Authority, following the model successfully used in traffic management. The move aims to make food safety enforcement more efficient and transparent.
During a meeting between Sindhโs Minister for Food, Mehboob-uz-Zaman, and PPP Womenโs Wing Chairperson Faryal Talpur, officials provided detailed briefings on online registration, complaint management, and the digital challan process. The minister emphasized that digitization will improve services for citizens while ensuring stricter enforcement of regulations.
Mehboob-uz-Zaman also briefed Faryal Talpur on recent actions against substandard food and shared updates regarding the departmentโs vet stock policy. The plan to introduce e-challan system will allow inspectors to issue fines digitally, reducing paperwork and increasing accountability.
Earlier this year, the Sindh Food Authority conducted a high-profile inspection at a renowned Karachi Five-Star Hotel chain near PID. Authorities found serious food safety violations, including 25 kilograms of expired meat, outdated buttercream, and other substandard items. Kitchen and washing areas failed to meet hygiene standards, raising public health concerns.
The findings prompted the Sindh Food Authority to file a case in the South Civil Judgeโs court, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and accountability. Officials said the digital challan system will complement such inspections by streamlining enforcement and reducing delays in issuing penalties.
The minister confirmed that the government intends to introduce e-challan system across all departments of the Sindh Food Authority. This step is expected to enhance transparency, reduce corruption, and ensure timely action against food safety violations.
With the new system, citizens can expect faster complaint resolution, and inspectors will be able to manage violations efficiently. The Sindh governmentโs initiative marks a significant step toward modernizing food safety enforcement in the province.
