Karachi on High Alert as Cyclone Asna Approaches Near; Fishing Banned in Arabian Sea

Following the tropical cyclone alert, local authorities have imposed a ban on fishermen from Karachi and the Thatta coastal area from operating in the Arabian Sea.

A deep depression is currently located over the Rann of Kutch, India, about 250 km east-southeast of Karachi, and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours.

Authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea, and various departments, including revenue and health, have been instructed to stay vigilant. Pakistan Fisher Forum leader Syed Gulab Shah reported that many fishing boats have returned to shore. The weather office has forecast cloudy conditions for Keti Bandar and its surrounding areas.

Fishermen Secure Boats at Korangi Ibrahim Hydari Amid Typhoon Threat

As the threat of a typhoon looms, fishermen along the Korangi Ibrahim Hydari coastline have been advised to stay out of the open sea. Thousands of boats have been anchored at Siddique Jetty, with many fishermen returning as early as August 25.

Facing days of inactivity, the fishermen are frustrated by the lack of government support, which is straining their finances. While some are using this downtime to repair their boats, concerns about high waves and the approaching storm persist among the coastal community.

The forecast predicts widespread rain and wind-thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy falls in Karachi division and several districts including Tharparker, Badin, Thatta, and Hyderabad, through August 31, with occasional breaks. Additionally, similar weather conditions are expected in Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, and Gwadar districts from August 30 to September 1.

The weather office has warned that heavy rains could cause pluvial flooding and inundation in low-lying areas of Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab. Additionally, these torrential rains may lead to flash flooding in hill torrents of D.G. Khan and local streams in Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Kalat, Khuzdar, Jaffarabad, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Barkhan, Loralai, Awaran, Panjgur, Washuk, Mastung, and Lasbella.

In regions like Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, heavy rains could trigger landslides.
