The Sole surviving infant from the tragic fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has died.
The infant, identified as Aizal, was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. She had been rescued by a nurse during the fire.
Aizal was the only infant to survive the initial incident. The fire claimed the lives of 14 other newborns at the hospital.
According to her mother, Asifa Bibi, Aizal was born on August 12. She was six months and 10 days old when the incident occurred.
The mother told local media that her daughter suffered from smoke inhalation. She said Aizal was the family’s first child.
The infant had remained under intensive medical care following the fire. Her condition required continued treatment after the rescue.
Aizal’s death has now brought the total number of infant deaths to 15. All infants affected by the nursery fire have now died.
The incident occurred on August 26, 2026, at the neonatal nursery of PIMS in Islamabad. It caused widespread grief and raised concerns about hospital safety.
The Sole surviving infant had been rescued by staff nurse Razia Noreen. The nurse entered the affected area despite the dangerous conditions.
Razia Noreen’s actions received national recognition after the incident. President Asif Ali Zardari approved the Tamgha-i-Shujaat for her bravery.
The award was approved a day before Aizal’s death. It recognised the nurse’s efforts during the nursery fire.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also met Razia Noreen earlier. He presented her with a cheque worth Rs10 million.
The prime minister also announced a national award for the nurse. The recognition was linked to her courage and dedication to duty.
The death of Aizal has added another painful chapter to the tragedy. The Sole surviving infant had remained the focus of public attention after the fire.
Her death means no infant affected by the August 26 incident survived. The tragedy has claimed the lives of all 15 infants involved.
