Special Parliamentary Committee to Select Pakistan's Next Chief Justice Today

The countdown has begun for the selection of Pakistan’s next Chief Justice, as the National Assembly has officially established a special parliamentary committee to oversee the appointment. A notification regarding the committee’s formation was released by the National Assembly Secretariat.

The committee includes prominent members from various political parties, such as Khawaja Asif, Ahsan Iqbal, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Shaista Pervaiz Malik from the Pakistan Muslim League (N).

The Pakistan People’s Party has nominated Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Senator Farooq H. Naek, and Rania Ansar. The Sunni Ittehad Council is represented by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Senator Ali Zafar, while Senator Kamran Murtaza represents Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).

According to the 26th constitutional amendment, outgoing Chief Justice Faiz Isa must submit three names for consideration by tonight.

A key meeting of the special parliamentary committee is set for today at 4 PM in the Parliament House, where members will deliberate and make a decision on the appointment of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan. The outcome of this meeting is anticipated to have a significant impact on the future of the judiciary in the country.
