The Punjab government has launched a large-scale Eid-ul-Adha cleanliness operation under the flagship Suthra Punjab initiative. Authorities say the campaign aims to ensure clean cities and proper disposal of sacrificial waste across the province during the three days of Eid.
Officials estimate that nearly 3.5 to 3.7 million animals will be sacrificed in Punjab this year. Managing such a massive amount of animal waste has always remained a major administrative challenge during Eid-ul-Adha.
The government said Suthra Punjab has become one of the province’s most important public service projects. Authorities claim the programme has improved sanitation systems and strengthened waste management operations across Punjab.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been widely credited for launching the Suthra Punjab initiative. Officials stated that the project has also generated more than 100,000 direct employment opportunities for workers across the province.
According to government data, all operational machinery used in the campaign has been manufactured locally under the “Made in Pakistan” vision. Vehicles, loader rickshaws, uniforms, and equipment were all produced within the country, helping local industries and businesses.
Last year, Punjab introduced a major Eid cleanliness drive for the first time under the Suthra Punjab programme. Citizens witnessed cleaner roads, neighborhoods, and public spaces during Eid days. Authorities also washed roads with rose water as part of the campaign.
This year, the operation has been expanded further. Around 184,000 sanitation workers are participating in the Eid drive. Nearly 60,000 vehicles have also been deployed for waste collection and transportation.
Officials revealed that more than 12 million environmentally friendly waste bags have been distributed among citizens. In addition, over 3,800 primary waste collection centres have been established across Punjab.
More than 12,000 loader rickshaws and pickup vehicles are being used for transporting sacrificial waste. Authorities also set up operational camps in more than 4,000 union councils across the province.
Special cleanliness arrangements have also been made for 288 cattle markets and sale points. Meanwhile, sanitation teams have been assigned to 2,687 commercial markets during Eid.
According to officials, around 40,000 litres of rose water will be used for washing roads and public spaces. The government has also established more than 1,200 designated slaughter points for proper waste management.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq are supervising awareness campaigns and operational activities linked to Suthra Punjab. During recent media talks, Azma Bukhari said the helpline for the cleanliness drive would remain active 24 hours a day.
Authorities warned that strict action would be taken against those disposing of animal waste irresponsibly. Throwing waste into drains, canals, empty plots, or public spaces has been completely banned. Violators may face fines of up to Rs50,000.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also directed district administrations to remain active in the field during Eid operations. She emphasized that there would be no compromise on cleanliness standards under the Suthra Punjab campaign.
