Tensions Escalate as Pakistan Warns India Over Water Dispute

Amid rising regional tensions, Pakistan’s military has issued a sharp warning to India, declaring any move to block water flow into Pakistan as a serious provocation that could lead to long-term conflict. The warning comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at stopping water under the Indus Waters Treaty, prompting swift reactions from Islamabad.

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said Pakistan would respond decisively to any act of aggression, stressing that water is a lifeline for over 240 million people. “It is some madman who can think he can stop water of this country,” he told Arab News, calling such a move a clear red line.

Lt Gen Chaudhry added that Pakistan is a peace-loving nation but will not bow to Indian dominance or tolerate repeated provocations. He also pointed to rising extremism within India, blaming it on the mistreatment of minorities like Muslims and Sikhs, which he said was fueling internal unrest.

The latest escalation follows deadly cross-border strikes earlier this month, temporarily halted by a US-brokered ceasefire. With Modi’s recent remarks and Pakistan’s forceful response, the fragile calm now hangs in the balance.
