Pakistan Reaches New Space Milestone as Two Astronauts Are Shortlisted

Pakistan has taken another important step toward human spaceflight. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has completed the secondary phase of its astronaut candidate selection process. Officials described the development as a major milestone for the countryโ€™s Human Spaceflight Programme.

According to a press release issued by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the process followed international standards. It began with an initial screening conducted inside Pakistan. Candidates were assessed on basic eligibility, academic background, and physical fitness. Only those who met strict criteria were allowed to move forward.

After the first phase, selected candidates were sent to China for further evaluation. These assessments took place at the Astronauts Centre of China (ACC). The candidates underwent detailed medical tests, psychological evaluations, and aptitude examinations. Experts ensured that all procedures matched global human spaceflight requirements.

At the end of this stage, two candidates were shortlisted. Officials confirmed that both successfully passed all required tests. The presence of Pakistani astronauts in the global space community now appears closer than ever.

The shortlisted candidates will now enter advanced training. This training will last for six months and will be conducted at ACC. It will focus on space science, mission operations, emergency response, and physical endurance. The goal is to prepare them for real conditions aboard a space station.

After training, only one candidate will be chosen for the final mission. The selected individual is expected to travel to space aboard the Chinese Space Station. The planned mission window is October or November 2026. This will mark a historic moment for Pakistan.

The programme is based on the Astronaut Cooperation Agreement. This agreement was signed in February 2025. It was finalized under the leadership of Pakistanโ€™s Prime Minister. Officials said his vision played a key role in making this cooperation possible.

Chinaโ€™s government has also shown strong support for the initiative. Pakistan was chosen as the first foreign partner in Chinaโ€™s astronaut programme. This decision reflects growing trust and scientific collaboration between the two countries.

SUPARCO officials said the initiative will inspire future generations. They believe Pakistani astronauts can help strengthen national interest in science and technology. The programme is also expected to enhance Pakistanโ€™s standing in space research.
