WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Mohammad Saeed recently visited the site of Tarbela Dam. He reviewed the ongoing fifth expansion project there.
During the visit, officials gave him a detailed briefing. They covered all major aspects of the work on Tarbela Dam’s fifth extension hydropower project.
The briefing showed that 56 percent of the expansion work is now complete. This includes progress on key structures like tunnels and the powerhouse.
Officials explained the current challenges and the project timeline. The first electricity generation unit is set to start in April 2027.
Chairman Saeed listened carefully to updates on progress. He stressed the need to speed up certain parts of the work.
He directed the team to focus more on the tunnel and powerhouse construction. Consultants, contractors, and WAPDA staff received clear instructions to make stronger efforts.
The goal is timely completion without compromising quality. The chairman urged everyone to deploy extra resources where needed.
Once finished, the project will add 1,530 megawatts of clean hydropower capacity. It will supply about 1.466 billion units of low-cost, eco-friendly electricity to the national grid each year.
Funding comes from international partners. The World Bank provides 390 million dollars. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank contributes 300 million dollars.
This expansion builds on existing infrastructure at Tarbela Dam. After completion, the total installed capacity will reach 6,418 megawatts.
The chairman also inspected the fourth extension project during his visit. That earlier phase has already delivered 33 billion units to the national grid.
Tarbela Dam remains one of Pakistan’s key hydropower assets. Located on the Indus River, it supports irrigation, flood control, and energy needs.
The fifth extension focuses on green energy goals. It helps reduce reliance on expensive fuels and promotes sustainable power.
WAPDA continues to prioritize such projects. They aim to boost Pakistan’s energy security and economic growth.
The visit highlights commitment to completing major infrastructure on schedule. Steady progress brings the country closer to added clean power by 2027.
