Automobile experts in Pakistan have warned that an increasing number of vehicle fire incidents are linked to poor maintenance and faulty electrical work.
Speaking on ARY News program “Bakhabar Savera,” specialist Sunil Sarfaraz Manj explained the main reasons why cars catch fire. These include faulty modifications, defective fuel systems, and catalytic converter issues.
Manj noted that many owners add lights, horns, and other electrical accessories using cheap wiring. Untrained mechanics performing these modifications can increase the risk of short circuits, which may cause fires.
“In older vehicles, petrol pipelines deteriorate and may start leaking. Even a small spark can cause a serious fire,” he said. He also highlighted that engines can overheat if not cleaned regularly, which is another common reason cars catch fire.
Experts advise drivers to immediately switch off the engine and evacuate passengers if they notice smoke or a burning smell. In emergencies, passengers should know how to break windows using the metal rods of a headrest if doors are locked.
Manj also emphasized keeping a fire extinguisher in the car. He warned that water is not effective against petrol fires, so proper equipment is necessary.
The expert urged motorists to avoid the traditional “ustaad culture,” where unlicensed mechanics are relied upon. Certified and manufacturer-approved mechanics are safer for vehicle maintenance.
He further stressed regular inspection of fuel filters, wiring, and rubber pipes in older cars. These steps help ensure vehicles are roadworthy and can prevent situations where cars catch fire.
With these precautions, drivers can reduce fire risks and protect both property and lives. Authorities also recommend public awareness campaigns on vehicle safety and proper maintenance practices.
