ISLAMABAD – The latest district rankings for literacy rates in Punjab reveal Murree as the top performer, achieving an impressive 84.3 percent, according to 24NewsHD.
Following Murree, Rawalpindi secured second place with 83.2 percent, while Jhelum ranked third at 82.1 percent. Other districts include Gujranwala at 81.2 percent, Lahore at 80.7 percent, and Faisalabad at 68.7 percent.
In contrast, South Punjab continues to lag behind. Multan recorded a literacy rate of 60.2 percent, while Rajanpur fell significantly lower at just 36.1 percent. The figures highlight a clear divide between urban and rural areas in terms of educational development.
Nationally, Pakistan’s literacy rate has reached 63 percent, marking a modest improvement of three percentage points over the last five years. Punjab leads the provinces with an average literacy rate of 68 percent, while Balochistan remains at the bottom with only 49 percent.
The survey also showed some progress in school enrollment. The proportion of out-of-school children has decreased slightly, dropping from 30 percent to 28 percent across the country.
Experts say the new data underlines the need for targeted policies to improve education in rural areas. They emphasize increasing access to schools, improving teacher quality, and addressing regional disparities to raise overall literacy rates.
Murree’s achievement as the district with the highest literacy rate demonstrates how focused educational initiatives and urban infrastructure can make a significant impact. Policymakers hope this example will inspire improvements in underperforming districts across Punjab and other provinces.
