Wifaq ul Madaris, Pakistan’s federation of Islamic seminaries, has prohibited madaris from collecting money from students for annual convocation events. The decision affects both boys’ and girls’ seminaries across the country.
In a letter sent to seminary administrations, Wifaq ul Madaris noted that events like Khatm-e-Bukhari and Takmeel-e-Hifz-ul-Quran have increasingly faced irregularities and un-Islamic practices. Students, many from poor or middle-class families, were reportedly asked to pay thousands of rupees, placing a heavy financial burden on them.
The federation highlighted misuse of the funds, citing cases where money was spent on expensive attire for administrators and teachers. In some instances, gold jewelry was gifted to female administrators. Wifaq ul Madaris emphasized that madaris should operate on principles of simplicity and sincerity, and such practices are inappropriate.
The letter further pointed out that certain seminaries purchased identical costly outfits for students, arranged lavish feasts, used funds for Umrah pilgrimages, bought motorcycles for teachers, and even prepared expensive cakes—practices seen as Western customs. These actions, Wifaq ul Madaris stated, have undermined the dignity, spirituality, and blessings of religious gatherings.
Wifaq ul Madaris instructed seminary officials to immediately stop these practices and ensure convocations are simple, dignified, and spiritually focused. It also recommended that seminaries avoid using the title Khatm-e-Bukhari Sharif for events, suggesting alternatives like Annual Dastar Bandi or Chadar Pushi ceremonies.
The federation warned of strict consequences, stating that any future evidence of funds being collected from students for annual events could result in disciplinary action against the concerned seminary.
This move by Wifaq ul Madaris aims to restore the sanctity and focus of seminary ceremonies while protecting students from unnecessary financial pressure. Officials emphasized that religious gatherings should reflect spiritual values, simplicity, and respect for students’ families.
By enforcing this directive, Wifaq ul Madaris seeks to ensure that seminaries adhere to ethical practices and maintain the credibility and spiritual purpose of their annual events.
