World Bank Chief Arrives in Pakistan Amid Key Discussions

The World Bank president, President Banga, is scheduled to visit Pakistan until February 4. During the visit, he will meet senior government officials, including the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and Finance Minister.

Sources say the meetings will focus on economic reforms, water disputes, and key development priorities. The World Bank president is expected to be briefed on Pakistanโ€™s reform agenda and ongoing projects aimed at boosting growth and stability.

Notable progress is anticipated in implementing the 10-year Country Partnership Framework. Under this framework, the World Bank plans to provide Pakistan with $20 billion by 2035 to support economic and development goals.

Last December, the World Bank approved $700 million in financing for the Pakistan Public Resources for Inclusive Development โ€“ Multiphase Programmatic Approach (PRID-MPA). This multi-year initiative supports macroeconomic stability and improved public service delivery.

According to a World Bank press release, PRID-MPA is designed to help federal and provincial governments mobilize domestic revenue, enhance public spending quality, and use digital tools for better service delivery.

The program aligns with Pakistanโ€™s fiscal reforms under the IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the National Fiscal Pact. It is expected to provide up to $1.35 billion in total financing over multiple phases.

Officials say the visit of the World Bank president aims to strengthen Pakistanโ€™s partnership with the institution. Discussions are expected to accelerate ongoing reforms and ensure effective implementation of development projects across the country.

The World Bankโ€™s support is seen as crucial for maintaining economic stability and improving governance in Pakistan. Authorities hope that President Bangaโ€™s visit will enhance cooperation and help achieve long-term economic targets.

The meetings will also focus on strategies to address water disputes and other structural challenges affecting economic growth. Government sources confirmed that both sides are committed to continuing collaborative efforts for sustainable development.
