‘I Can’t Breathe’: Last Phone Call of Missing Sujawal Youth Trapped in Gul Plaza

Karachi authorities continue their search for a youth trapped in the Gul Plaza fire, which has devastated the shopping mall. Rescue operations are expected to continue for several more days.

According to the family of Amir, the young man worked at a crockery shop inside the mall. They last spoke to him on Sunday morning, when he reported thick smoke and difficulty breathing. Since then, Amir’s mobile phone has remained switched off.

Amir’s family is in deep distress and has appealed to the government and rescue authorities to locate him. They requested that if he has passed away, his body be recovered and handed over to them.

Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan explained that the fire site poses serious challenges. Teams have been working non-stop for three days amid unstable debris and lingering flames. “This is a very large area, and the fire can flare up while removing debris,” Khan said.

Search operations have focused on the first and second floors. The intense heat on the second floor has forced teams to halt the search in some areas. Authorities also removed 32 vehicles from the rooftop parking to aid rescue work. One firefighter has already died in the line of duty, highlighting the risks involved.

Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso confirmed that 85 people are still missing. So far, 27 deaths have been verified, and 52 families have submitted DNA samples to assist in identification. Authorities continue to urge patience as debris removal proceeds carefully.

Officials stressed that the youth trapped in Gul Plaza may still be found alive, and every effort is being made to ensure the safe removal of debris. Safety and structural integrity remain the top priority. The SBCA has also been asked to report on the building’s condition to guide further operations.

Families of missing persons are advised to report to the designated help desk or contact official numbers. Authorities warned that one portion of the building is extremely weak, while other areas remain relatively stable.

The search for Amir and other victims continues amid ongoing fire hazards and difficult conditions, as rescue teams work tirelessly to recover all missing individuals.
