PML-N Alleges Imran Khan Seeking NRO from US, IMF

On Saturday, Ahsan Iqbal, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was pursuing a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) from the United States and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its founder, but emphasized that the PTI leader must prove his innocence in court.

The NRO, issued by former president Gen Pervez Musharraf in 2007, granted amnesty to politicians, political workers, and bureaucrats accused of corruption, sparking controversy.

Iqbal’s statement came after reports that Imran Khan, currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail in various cases, had written a letter to the IMF requesting that lending to Pakistan be contingent upon an independent audit of the disputed February 8 elections.

Additionally, 31 members of the US Congress recently signed a letter to President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging them not to recognize a new government in Pakistan until an investigation into allegations of election interference had been conducted.

Speaking to the media alongside PML-N leader Ata Tarar, the former planning minister stated, “The PTI founder will not receive the NRO. He must demonstrate his innocence in court.”

Responding to inquiries, Iqbal remarked, “The PTI has a history of inciting chaos and involvement in electoral rigging. The National Assembly speaker rejected the PTI’s claims.”

Expressing optimism about the PTI, Iqbal highlighted his party’s stance of not opposing the nomination of Omar Ayub for contesting the election of the prime minister, emphasizing the PML-N’s commitment to democratic principles. Denouncing disruptive political tactics, he stressed zero tolerance for anarchic practices.
