CR7 Claims Saudi Pro League Surpasses French Ligue 1 Standards

Legendary Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed high regard for the Saudi Pro League, asserting that it is more competitive than the French Ligue 1. Despite the French league being traditionally considered one of the top five globally, Ronaldo, now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, believes the Saudi Pro League has a higher standard.

Speaking at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, Ronaldo stated, “I believe they are going to be in the top three or four [leagues] in the world, and, step by step, we are going to reach that.” The five-time Ballon d’Or winner emphasized that, in his opinion, the Saudi League is not inferior to the French league and, in fact, is more competitive.

Ronaldo praised the level of the Saudi Pro League, noting that it surpasses the French league in terms of competitiveness. He acknowledged the presence of two or three strong teams in the French league but emphasized that, in Saudi Arabia, the competition is more intense.

Reflecting on his move to the Saudi Pro League a year ago, Ronaldo expressed his satisfaction, highlighting the positive impact of the competent system in the league. He commended the progress being made in Saudi football, stating, “It will take a long time, but in life, we say, step by step, to reach the highest level.”

At 39, Ronaldo has been in stellar form, scoring 20 goals in 18 Saudi Pro League games this season. With aspirations to compete at the highest level, he looks forward to leading Portugal in the EURO 2024, hosted by Germany from June 14 to June 24. Portugal is set to face Turkey, the Czech Republic, and a yet-to-be-determined fourth team in Group F.
