India Faces Setback as Coach Morkel Leaves Ahead of Champions Trophy

Coach Morkel

India’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have taken a hit as bowling coach Morne Morkel has left the team camp in Dubai due to personal reasons. While the exact cause remains unconfirmed, reports suggest it may be linked to the passing of his father.

Morkel’s sudden departure raises concerns over India’s bowling attack, especially with Jasprit Bumrah absent and Mohammed Shami struggling for form. The inexperience of Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana in ODIs further adds to the challenge.

The South African coach, who has been with India since August 2024, attended a training session on February 16 but was absent the following day before reportedly flying back to South Africa. There is no official confirmation on whether he will rejoin the team.

India, led by Rohit Sharma, is set to begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, with a training session scheduled for February 19 after a brief break.
