Pakistan Cricket Team Parts Ways with Fielding Coach Mohammad Masroor

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to extend the contract of fielding coach Mohammad Masroor. His series-to-series agreement has ended, and the board is now looking ahead with new plans. This decision is part of a broader backroom restructuring aimed at improving team performance.

Masroor had worked closely with both youth and senior squads of the Pakistan cricket team. His primary responsibility was to raise the team’s fielding and fitness levels—areas where Pakistan has historically struggled. Despite his efforts, the national side’s fielding remains a concern, especially during high-pressure tournaments.

Fielding mishaps have cost the Pakistan cricket team dearly in recent years. Key matches in the ICC World Cup 2019, multiple T20 World Cups, and Asia Cup contests were lost due to poor fielding. The PCB has rotated several coaches in this role over the years, but consistent improvement has remained elusive.

In a new development, PCB has appointed Australian Shane McDermott as the fielding coach for the upcoming Bangladesh tour. McDermott brings valuable experience, having worked with national teams including Australia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

In addition, Grant Luden has returned as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Pakistan cricket team. Luden had previously served in the same role and understands the physical needs of the squad well.

Both McDermott and Luden have been included in the coaching staff’s WhatsApp group to ensure better communication and coordination with the management.

Meanwhile, former fast bowler Umar Gul has been named head coach of the Pakistan Shaheens, also known as the A team. This move aims to strengthen the pipeline of young talent under experienced guidance.

Masroor’s departure comes at a crucial time, as the Asia Cup draws near. Set to be held in India, the tournament will demand high fielding standards due to the fast outfields.

With the Pakistan cricket team expected to face top rivals like India and Sri Lanka, strong preparation is essential. The PCB now faces the challenge of ensuring that the new coaching setup can deliver results quickly.
