Unexpected Twist: Who Will Open for Pakistan in the Champions Trophy?

As Pakistan prepares for the 2025 ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has revealed a squad with only one designated opener: Fakhar Zaman. This has sparked speculation about who will partner Fakhar at the top of the order, with Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel seen as strong possibilities.

Fakhar’s return to the national squad after the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is a major boost for Pakistan’s batting strength. However, the absence of Saim Ayub due to an ankle injury, along with Abdullah Shafique’s exclusion owing to inconsistent form, has left an opening at the top of the order.

National selector Asad Shafiq commented on the matter, stating that the final decision will depend on pitch conditions, the opposition, and the match strategy.

“Fakhar Zaman’s comeback is a great advantage for our top order. His aggressive style and match-winning potential are crucial for our plans,” Shafiq remarked, emphasizing Fakhar’s role in the team.

He also highlighted Saud Shakeel’s inclusion, which aims to solidify the batting lineup. Shakeel’s recent performances in Test cricket, especially in home conditions, have been impressive, and his steady, calculated approach makes him a valuable asset.

“Saud Shakeel is a smart and seasoned batter who builds his innings carefully and excels at creating partnerships. He’ll be vital for us during the Champions Trophy,” Shafiq added.

Regarding Babar Azam, his versatility and previous successful stints as an opener in T20Is make him a strong candidate for the role. Babar has consistently delivered under pressure, including standout performances in the Cape Town Test while Saim Ayub was sidelined.
