Madison Keys stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Saturday. The 29-year-old American overcame a fierce fightback from the two-time defending champion to end Sabalenka’s 20-match Melbourne Park winning streak.

In an emotional moment, Keys celebrated her hard-fought victory, marking the end of a 15-year journey from teenage prodigy to Grand Slam champion. “I’ve wanted this for so long,” she said, recalling her runner-up finish at the 2017 US Open. Keys praised her team and husband-coach Bjorn Fratangelo for their unwavering support during challenging times.

Sabalenka, who aimed for a third consecutive Australian Open title, praised Keys’ resilience. “Madison, what a tournament. You fought so hard for this trophy,” she said, promising to return stronger next year.

Keys, the 19th seed, played fearless tennis in the decisive moments, holding her nerve to seal the title with her 29th winner after 2 hours and 2 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

With this triumph, Keys becomes the fourth-oldest first-time major winner in the Open Era and will return to her career-high ranking of world No. 7.
