Nemanja Matic has officially ended his time at Lyon. The club and the midfielder agreed to terminate his contract early, even though it was set to run until June 2026. The decision was made as part of Lyon’s effort to cut wage costs.
Matic joined the French club in January 2024. He made an immediate impact by helping the team climb the league table and reach the domestic cup final. His leadership and experience were highly valued during a tough season.
However, things changed off the pitch. Earlier this year, Matic received a two-match ban for taping over a league anti-discrimination badge during a game. That moment led to some friction and may have played a role in his early exit.
Now a free agent, Matic is attracting interest from several clubs. Italian side Sassuolo have shown early signs of interest and are exploring the possibility of a deal. The club is looking for experience as they prepare for a return to top-flight football.
In England, newly promoted Ipswich Town are also considering a move. They believe Matic could add much-needed leadership in their midfield. His previous Premier League experience with Chelsea and Manchester United makes him an appealing option.
Elsewhere, clubs like Como and Napoli are also monitoring the situation. Both teams are looking to add a veteran presence ahead of a demanding new season.
At 37, Matic is weighing his options carefully. He has not yet made a decision on where he will play next, but a move could happen before the transfer window closes.
