The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced new dates for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia.
The tournament will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028.
The competition was originally scheduled from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
However, ongoing tensions and security concerns in the Middle East have forced organizers to delay the tournament by nearly a year.
The competition will feature 24 national football teams from across Asia.
AFC Postpones Asian Cup Following Regional Tensions
The AFC confirmed the decision on Tuesday after discussions with Saudi football authorities.
The talks involved the tournament’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF).
According to the AFC, exceptional circumstances in the region have created difficulties for tournament preparations.
These include security concerns, travel disruptions, and logistical challenges.
The decision comes amid growing tensions following attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement.
Several major sporting events in Saudi Arabia have also faced postponements or cancellations in recent weeks.
The AFC said the delay was necessary to protect the interests of teams, officials, spectators, and other stakeholders.
New Dates Await FIFA Approval
The AFC Postpones Asian Cup 2027 as organizers work to address the challenges affecting the competition.
The revised schedule will now be submitted to FIFA for official approval.
Once approved, the tournament will begin on December 23, 2027, and conclude on January 21, 2028.
The competition will still take place in Saudi Arabia, with matches planned across three major cities.
Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar will host the tournament.
Saudi organizers had previously stated that preparations were progressing according to schedule despite regional security concerns.
However, the latest developments have led to changes in the tournament calendar.
Saudi Arabia to Continue Tournament Preparations
Despite the postponement, Saudi Arabia remains committed to hosting the Asian Cup.
The Local Organizing Committee has confirmed that preparations will continue in coordination with the AFC.
Organizers will focus on ensuring that stadiums, facilities, and other arrangements are ready for the revised schedule.
The AFC will also work closely with participating football associations to manage the impact of the delay.
Sponsors, broadcasters, and other partners will be involved in discussions about the updated tournament plans.
What Does the Delay Mean for Asian Teams?
The postponement means participating national teams will have more time before the tournament begins.
However, football associations may need to adjust their training schedules and preparations.
The revised dates could also require changes to international football calendars and travel arrangements.
The AFC has said it will coordinate with relevant stakeholders to reduce disruptions.
The decision to postpone the tournament reflects the challenges created by the current regional situation.
