Glenn Maxwell, one of the most electrifying cricketers of his generation, has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) at the age of 36. The Australian all-rounder made the revelation during a podcast, ending a vibrant 50-over career that spanned 149 matches and over a decade of explosive performances.
Maxwell, however, made it clear that he isnโt done with cricket just yet. He plans to continue playing T20 Internationals and has his sights set on the 2026 T20 World Cup.
His decision follows Australiaโs semi-final exit from the ICC Champions Trophy and Steve Smithโs retirement from ODIs, signaling a generational shift in Australiaโs white-ball setup.
Why Maxwell Retired:
- A serious leg injury in 2022 affected his ability to cope with the physical demands of ODIs.
- Admitted that he didnโt want to hold onto his place โfor selfish reasons.โ
- Believes itโs time for younger players to step up before the 2027 World Cup.
“I didnโt want to just hold on for a couple of series. This gives the next generation the best shot,” Maxwell said.
