New Zealand Bowler Brett Randell Creates Historic Record with Five Wickets in Five Balls

New Zealand Bowler Brett Randell Creates Historic Record with Five Wickets in Five Balls

A domestic cricketer from New Zealand has made history by achieving a rare bowling milestone in first-class cricket. Brett Randell became the first player in 254 years to take five wickets in five consecutive deliveries.

The remarkable moment happened during a Plunket Shield match in Napier. Randell was playing for Central Districts cricket team against Northern Districts cricket team at McLean Park.

Cricket statisticians confirmed that this record had never been achieved in first-class cricket before. The data comes from the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians, which maintains historical records of the sport.

First-class cricket dates back to 1772, when historians recognise the first documented match. Since then, no player had managed to take five wickets in five balls in this format until Randellโ€™s achievement in New Zealand.

The historic moment began with the final ball of Randellโ€™s second over. He clean bowled Northern Districts opener Henry Cooper with a sharp delivery.

At the start of his next over, Randell struck again. He dismissed former New Zealand national cricket team Test player Jeet Raval. The dismissal continued the impressive sequence of wickets.

Randell then took three more wickets with successive deliveries. The final wicket in the streak came when international all-rounder Kristian Clarke was bowled.

This five-wicket sequence stunned players and spectators at the ground. Although the crowd at McLean Park was small, the moment quickly gained attention among cricket fans.

Randellโ€™s performance did not stop there. He claimed two more wickets in his following over. As a result, Northern Districts were dismissed for only 82 runs.

Earlier in the match, Central Districts had scored 373 runs. Randell finished the innings with figures of 7 wickets for 25 runs.

The 30-year-old bowler now holds the best figures of his nine-year first-class career. He has played 38 matches in the domestic circuit of New Zealand.

Experts say the achievement highlights the unpredictability and excitement of cricket. Records like this rarely occur, especially in traditional formats of the game.

Randellโ€™s performance has already drawn attention from cricket followers and statisticians worldwide. Many believe it will remain one of the most remarkable moments in domestic cricket history.
