GLASGOW: Pakistan’s young boxer Fatima Zahra has made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to win a boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games. The 22-year-old secured a bronze medal after reaching the women’s 60kg semi-final.
The achievement is a major milestone for Pakistan’s boxing history. It also ended a 12-year wait for a Commonwealth Games boxing medal for the country.
Pakistan’s last boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games came in 2014. At the Glasgow Games, boxer Muhammad Waseem won a silver medal. Fatima Zahra has now become the first female boxer from Pakistan to reach the podium at the event.
She booked her place in the semi-final after an impressive quarter-final performance. Fatima defeated New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson with a unanimous 5-0 decision. The victory guaranteed her at least a bronze medal under the tournament rules.
In the semi-final, Fatima Zahra faced Canada’s Marie Bathol Al-Ahmadiya. She was unable to advance to the final after losing the contest. However, her place in the semi-final secured Pakistan’s first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Speaking after her achievement, Fatima expressed pride in representing Pakistan on the international stage. She said women’s boxing in Pakistan is making steady progress and her medal reflects that positive development.
She also said her ultimate goal remains winning a gold medal for Pakistan. At the same time, she described the bronze medal as an important achievement for the country’s boxing community.

Meanwhile, Pakistan faced disappointment in the men’s javelin event. Defending Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem finished ninth and could not retain his title.
Arshad started the competition with a foul on his opening attempt. His second throw measured 77.41 metres, while his third reached 75.39 metres.
Those distances were not enough to place him among the top eight competitors after the opening three rounds. Under the competition rules, only the top eight athletes advance to the final three throws.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga won the gold medal with a throw of 89.75 metres. India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal after recording a season-best throw of 85.83 metres.
