FIFA World Cup 2026 Opens in Mexico with a Star-Studded Opening Ceremony

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially got underway with a spectacular opening ceremony at the famous Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The event featured world-renowned musicians, cultural performances, and celebrations that marked the beginning of the largest tournament in World Cup history.

Thousands of fans packed the stadium to witness the opening festivities before the first match of the competition. The ceremony highlighted Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and welcomed football supporters from around the world.

One of the main attractions of the evening was a colorful tribute to Mexico’s Indigenous roots. Performers showcased traditions inspired by the ancient Aztec civilization through music, dance, and visual displays. The cultural presentation received a warm response from the crowd inside the historic venue.

Several international music stars also took part in the celebrations. Mexican rock band Maná performed their popular song Oye Mi Amor, while Danny Ocean, Los Ángeles Azules, and Colombian singer J Balvin entertained fans with energetic performances.

The biggest moment of the ceremony came when global superstar Shakira joined Nigerian singer Burna Boy on stage. The pair performed Dai Dai, the official anthem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Their performance created an electric atmosphere and set the tone for what is expected to be an unforgettable tournament.

Following the ceremony, attention shifted to the opening Group A match between hosts Mexico and South Africa. The game officially launched the month-long competition that will bring together teams from around the globe.

This edition of the FIFA World Cup is historic because it is being hosted by three countries for the first time. Mexico, Canada, and the United States are jointly organizing the tournament, which has also expanded to include 48 teams.

FIFA has planned separate opening celebrations in all three host nations. Canada’s ceremony is scheduled to take place in Toronto ahead of the match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field. Canadian music stars Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé are expected to perform.

Later, Los Angeles will host the United States opening celebration before the US Men’s National Team faces Paraguay. International artists Katy Perry, Future, and Anitta are among the performers set to entertain fans.
