LAHORE: Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is expected to become the new head coach of Pakistanโs Test cricket team. Sources said a formal announcement will be made soon.
The post of Test head coach has been vacant since October 2025. Azhar Mahmood served as interim coach during the recent series against South Africa national cricket team.
According to sources, Sarfaraz Ahmed will begin his duties during Pakistanโs upcoming Test series against the Bangladesh national cricket team in May. The two-match series is part of the ICC World Test Championship 2027 cycle.
The first Test will start on May 8. The second Test is scheduled for May 16. These matches will be important for Pakistanโs position in the championship table.
Before this expected appointment, Sarfaraz Ahmed was working as a mentor for the Asia Cup-winning Under-19 team. He is currently with Pakistan Shaheens. The team is playing against England Lions in the United Arab Emirates. The series includes T20 and one-day matches.
Sarfaraz has had a long international career. He played 54 Test matches and scored 3,031 runs. His record includes four centuries and 21 half-centuries.
In One Day Internationals, he featured in 117 matches. He scored 2,315 runs with two centuries and 11 fifties. In T20 Internationals, he played 61 games and made 818 runs, including three fifties.
As a captain, Sarfaraz achieved notable success. He led Pakistan to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017. Pakistan defeated India by 180 runs in the final. His overall win rate in ODIs as captain was around 70 percent.
During the Cricket World Cup, he guided the team to five wins in nine matches. In T20Is, he maintained a win rate of over 78 percent.

The 38-year-old last played a Test match against Australia national cricket team in Perth in 2023. Now, Sarfaraz Ahmed appears ready to take charge from the sidelines and lead Pakistanโs Test squad into a new phase.
