AHMEDABAD: South Africa claimed a dramatic victory over Afghanistan in a double super over thriller during their T20 World Cup clash on Wednesday.
Afghanistan were all out for 187 after South Africa scored 187-6 in a tense match. The game ended in a tie, forcing a super over to decide the winner. Both teams scored 18 runs in the first super over, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
The second super over proved even more exciting. South Africa posted 23 runs, leaving Afghanistan with a tough chase. Rahmanullah Gurbaz smashed three sixes off Keshav Maharaj, bringing Afghanistan close to a historic win. A crucial wide ball, however, meant they still needed a boundary to force a third super over.
In the end, Gurbazโs shot went straight to David Miller at point, handing South Africa the victory off the final ball. The win marked South Africaโs second consecutive success in Group D, placing them behind New Zealand.
Earlier, Gurbaz had scored a brilliant 84 off 42 balls to keep Afghanistan in contention. The team needed 13 runs from the last over with just one wicket in hand. Noor Ahmadโs six brought them closer, but a run-out on the final attempt tied the scores.
South Africaโs pace bowler Lungi Ngidi earned the Player of the Match award for his 3-26 in four overs. Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton anchored South Africaโs innings with scores of 59 and 61, putting on a crucial 114-run partnership for the second wicket.
The match is already being hailed as one of the most exciting T20 encounters of the World Cup, showcasing high drama, exceptional hitting, and tight bowling under pressure. Fans and experts praised the nerve-wracking super over and the playersโ remarkable performances.
