The cricketing world has been buzzing with intense debate following former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar’s controversial statement that even an Indian B team could defeat Pakistan. This bold claim came after Pakistan’s poor performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to win a single game as tournament hosts. Gavaskar’s comments on Sports Today ignited widespread reactions among fans and cricket experts alike.
Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie, who briefly served as Pakistan’s head coach in 2024-25, strongly disagreed with Gavaskar’s remarks, calling them “absolute nonsense.” Gillespie, a vocal advocate for Pakistan’s potential, stated that Pakistan has the talent to compete with any team if given the right backing. “If Pakistan pick and stick with the right players, they can beat anyone. They just need to back high-end talent and be patient with them,” he asserted.

Adding to the ongoing discussion, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif revealed that Gillespie had previously criticized Pakistan’s cricket system rather than individuals. Latif noted that Gillespie had referred to the system as a “joke,” calling for a restructuring of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to improve long-term performance. He also pointed out the positive impact foreign coaches like Mickey Arthur had in the past, highlighting the importance of discipline and principles in coaching.
Latif further commented on the current state of Pakistan cricket, mentioning that players have started to overshadow the game itself. He also weighed in on the controversy surrounding Babar Azam, urging the star player to address personal grievances professionally rather than through social media, citing his own experience with legal action in similar situations.
