Supreme Court to Resume Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Murder Reference Today

A nine-member larger bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan is set to address the presidential reference related to the review of the judgment in the murder case of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on Tuesday.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa will lead the bench, with other members including Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminud Din Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, and Justice Musarrat Hilali.

During the previous hearing, the court had requested written arguments from the amici curiae. Former President Asif Ali Zardari filed the reference 12 years ago in 2011, and seven hearings have taken place in the Supreme Court in connection with this reference.

The first hearing of the presidential reference occurred on January 2, 2012, and the last hearing was held 11 years ago on November 12, 2012. Subsequently, no further hearings were conducted. The case has recently been scheduled for re-hearing, with a nine-member bench led by CJP Qazi Faez Isa presiding over the case.
