Geoffrey Hinton, renowned as the “Godfather of AI,” has won the 2024 Nobel Prize for physics for his pivotal work on artificial neural networks. His contributions from the 1980s, which allow AI to recognize patterns and elements within data, have shaped the technology that powers modern AI today.
Despite the accolade, Hinton shared his reservations about the long-term consequences of his invention. He described a “second kind of regret” where he would make the same choices again but fears the potential outcome of systems becoming more intelligent than humans.
