Apple Plans to Use AI to Design Future Chips Faster

Apple

Apple is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence to accelerate the design of its custom chips, according to senior executive Johny Srouji.

Speaking at an event in Belgium last month, Srouji said AI-powered tools could offer a โ€œhuge productivity boostโ€ in handling complex chip design tasks. He highlighted the role of EDA (Electronic Design Automation) companies like Cadence and Synopsys, which are actively integrating AI into their systems.

Apple has been developing its own chips since 2010, starting with the A4, and now powers devices like the Mac and Vision Pro with in-house silicon. Srouji revealed that when Apple moved Macs away from Intel chips in 2020, the company went โ€œall inโ€ with no backup plan.

Experts say the adoption of AI could further solidify Appleโ€™s lead in high-performance chip development.
