Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the budget laptop market for the first time with a new, low-cost Mac. According to a Bloomberg report, the tech giant aims to attract students and everyday users who usually opt for Chromebooks or entry-level Windows laptops.
Targeting Students and Everyday Users
The new device will be designed for simple tasks such as web browsing, document editing, and streaming. Apple hopes this model will appeal to iPad buyers who prefer a traditional laptop experience with a keyboard and trackpad rather than a touchscreen.
New Design and Cost-Effective Components
Codenamed J700, the upcoming Mac is currently being tested and has entered early production with overseas suppliers. Apple plans to launch the laptop in the first half of next year. To keep the price low, it will use cheaper parts, including an LCD display smaller than the 13.6-inch screen of the MacBook Air.
Interestingly, this will be the first Mac powered by an iPhone-class processor rather than a chip made specifically for computers. Despite this, Appleβs internal tests reportedly show that the new chip performs better than the M1 processor used in earlier Mac models.
Expanding into the Sub-$1,000 Market
The affordable Mac could be priced under $1,000, possibly close to $600, making it competitive with Chromebooks and iPad keyboard bundles. While Apple has previously offered discounted M1 MacBook Airs through retailers, this new model will feature an entirely fresh design rather than being a repackaged version.
Competing with Windows and Chromebooks
Appleβs move comes as Chromebooks continue to dominate the education and budget segments. With Microsoft phasing out support for older Windows versions, Apple sees a chance to attract new users seeking a reliable option within its ecosystem.
Future Mac Lineup
This project is part of Appleβs wider Mac roadmap, which includes the upcoming M5 MacBook Air, new MacBook Pro models, and next-generation Mac Studio systems. The company is also working on a redesigned MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and OLED display, expected around 2026 or 2027.
Apple has not officially confirmed the affordable Mac, but analysts say the move could expand its market reach significantly.
