Apple Watch and iPhone users in the United States can now store a digital copy of their U.S. passport in Apple Wallet. This new feature, called Digital ID, allows travelers to present their passports at TSA checkpoints in over 250 U.S. airports for domestic flights.
The Digital ID option was introduced with iOS 16 and adds passports to the growing list of government IDs that can be stored in Apple Wallet, alongside driverโs licenses and state IDs. So far, the feature has been rolled out in several U.S. states and Puerto Rico, with plans to expand further.
To add a passport to Apple Wallet, users tap the โAddโ (+) button, select โDriverโs License or ID Cards,โ and then choose โDigital ID.โ The process requires scanning the passportโs photo page and embedded chip for verification. Users must also take a selfie and complete facial and head movements to confirm their identity.
Itโs important to note that this digital passport does not replace the physical one and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. Apple recommends carrying the physical passport until the system becomes fully operational.
Once set up, users can access Digital ID similarly to Apple Pay by double-clicking the side button on their iPhone or Apple Watch. Identity verification is completed with Face ID or Touch ID, and travelers can review the specific information being requested before sharing it.
Apple plans to expand the Digital IDโs usability beyond airports. In the future, users could verify their age at businesses, bars, event venues, or online services without revealing personal details like name or address. For example, delivery apps like Uber Eats could confirm age for alcohol orders securely through Apple Wallet.
The company emphasizes that it cannot see when or where the ID is used, ensuring user privacy. While currently in beta and limited to certain TSA checkpoints, the feature marks another step toward making Apple Wallet a full digital wallet solution for payments, IDs, and passes.
