Beijing Plans To Launch Massive Data Center In Space To Boost Computing Power

Beijing authorities have announced plans to build a massive data center in near-Earth orbit, approximately 700-800 kilometers above the planet. The project will combine space-based computing, relay transmission, and ground control systems into a centralized platform with over 1 gigawatt of power capacity.

The initiative was unveiled during a meeting by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Beijing Astro-Future Institute of Space Technology. Officials said the massive data center will host server clusters with millions of units, enabling large-scale space-based computing.

Development of the data center will take place in three phases. Between 2025 and 2027, the focus will be on solving key technological challenges and launching the first phase of the computing constellation. From 2028 to 2030, Earth-based data processing will be integrated with space-based computing power. By 2035, the massive data center is expected to be fully operational, supporting advanced space-based computing applications.

To drive this project, an innovation consortium has been formed, led by the Beijing Astro-Future Institute and including 24 organizations from various industries. The consortium will focus on construction, technological advancement, and integrating cutting-edge innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI), mobile communications, new materials, and renewable energy.

The first-generation experimental satellite for the data center has already been developed, with a launch planned for late 2025 or early 2026. Officials emphasized that this initiative represents a strategic integration of commercial space technology and AI.

Beijing aims to use the space data center to create new industrial chains, foster commercial applications of space technologies, and strengthen the cityโ€™s position as a global hub for scientific and technological innovation. Experts say the project could reshape space-based information processing and open up new opportunities for businesses and research worldwide.
