Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has named three careers he believes are safe from AI replacement: biologists, energy experts, and programmers.
According to Gates, these roles demand creativity, intuition, and complex problem-solving — traits AI has yet to master. He emphasized that while AI can process data efficiently, it cannot match human instincts needed in science and technology.

“Even with AI, forming hypotheses and making breakthroughs is still a deeply human effort,” Gates said, particularly highlighting the role of biologists in medical and human development.
Energy professionals and programmers, he added, are also crucial — with the former tackling climate-related challenges and the latter building and adapting AI systems themselves.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show, Gates humorously added a fourth safe career: athletes. “We won’t want to watch computers play baseball,” he joked.
Despite rising job concerns, Gates remains optimistic about AI’s benefits — especially in healthcare, education, and agriculture — but urged for ethical regulation to guide its use.
