BYD Unveils EV Battery Charging Faster Than Tesla’s Superchargers

BYD

Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a revolutionary electric vehicle (EV) battery capable of charging in just five minutes, rivaling the time it takes to refuel a petrol car. The Super E-Platform, revealed during a livestream event in Shenzhen, boasts 1,000kW charging speeds—four times faster than Tesla’s 250kW Superchargers.

The first models to feature this ultra-fast charging system will be BYD’s Han L and Tang L, initially launching in China. With over 20 million battery-powered vehicles already on Chinese roads, BYD aims to strengthen its position as the country’s leading EV manufacturer. The company surpassed Tesla in 2023 as the world’s largest EV maker, though its expansion into Europe and the U.S. remains limited.

Industry data highlights a growing shift toward electric vehicles. In 2023, EVs accounted for 18% of global car sales, up from 14% in 2022. Meanwhile, sales of petrol and diesel vehicles have dropped by 25% since 2018, suggesting that fossil fuel car sales may have peaked.

Despite its potential, BYD’s new technology will require a specialized charging infrastructure to achieve its promised speeds. Experts note that widespread adoption will depend on expanding high-speed charging networks. As automakers push for electrification, infrastructure development will be a critical factor in the future of EVs.
