China has officially started the second phase of its 6G technical trials after successfully completing the first phase. The first phase produced a repository of over 300 key 6G technologies, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Wednesday.
Zhang Yunming, vice minister of MIIT, highlighted the growth of Chinaโs telecom sector. He stated that total telecom services increased by 9.1% year-on-year. The industrial and information sectors contributed more than 40% to the countryโs economic growth.
By June 2025, China led the world in 6G patent applications, accounting for roughly 40.3% of global filings, according to the China Internet Development Report 2025. This underscores the countryโs strong position in next-generation wireless technology.
Unlike 5G, 6G will integrate AI, sensing, and computing more deeply. It will expand wireless coverage beyond the ground to air, space, land, and sea. Ministry spokesperson Xie Cun said that China now has the worldโs largest information infrastructure, with over 4.8 million 5G base stations and more than 1.2 billion users.
The second phase of trials aims to test advanced applications and strengthen Chinaโs technological edge. The government expects 6G to enable new industries and smarter industrial systems across the nation.
5G technology adoption is already accelerating. Over 23,000 โ5G + Industrial Internetโ projects have been launched, including unmanned mines, smart ports, and fully automated โlights-out factories.โ These facilities operate without human intervention, even in complete darkness.
Combining 5G and AI has significantly boosted efficiency. Zhang cited a home appliance company that implemented a โ5G + AIโ industrial vision inspection system. The company achieved a 275% increase in per capita production efficiency.
Chinaโs second phase of 6G trials signals its commitment to global leadership in next-generation technology. Experts believe that successful deployment of 6G will transform industries, enhance connectivity, and accelerate innovation worldwide.
