China’s Dongfang Electric Corp. has made a groundbreaking advancement in the offshore wind sector by unveiling a new turbine with a capacity of 26 megawatts, surpassing the previous record of 18 megawatts by 31%. This announcement positions Dongfang as a leader in wind turbine manufacturing, outpacing even the largest announced models that are yet to be built.
The push for larger turbines aims to reduce costs by maximizing energy generation from fewer units, although offshore wind technology remains more expensive than fossil fuels like coal in many areas.

Dongfang shared images of the nacelle, the core component housing the generator, but did not reveal details about the turbine’s impressive 310-meter (1,017 feet) blade diameter. The company already manufactures 18-megawatt turbines, with one recently starting electricity generation off the coast of Guangdong province.
Other Chinese manufacturers, such as Mingyang Smart Energy Group Ltd. and Windey Energy Technology Group Co., also produce turbines of similar size. Additionally, CRRC Corp Ltd. recently announced the creation of a 20-megawatt floating offshore wind turbine.
These developments come ahead of the China Wind Power event in Beijing, showcasing the competitive landscape in the wind energy sector.
