Chinese Scientists Develop Infrared-Detecting Contact Lenses

Lenses

Chinese researchers have created contact lenses that let users see near-infrared light, potentially unlocking real-life superhuman vision. The innovation, published in the journal Cell, uses upconversion nanoparticles to turn invisible infrared rays into visible colors — all without a power source.

Unlike bulky night vision gear, these lenses are transparent and wearable even in daylight. The breakthrough could lead to future glasses or wearables that expand human sight beyond its natural limits.

The team tested the lenses by having participants identify infrared light patterns and sources — even with closed eyes. Though the lenses don’t yet detect body heat, improvements are underway.

Researchers also see potential for use in color blindness aids, secret messaging, and augmented reality.
