Anthropic has expanded Claudeโs integration with Google Workspace. The update gives the AI assistant greater control over Gmail and Google Drive.
The new features are available to paid users. They allow Claude to perform several actions directly within connected Google services. Users can now ask Claude to draft emails in Gmail. The assistant can also reply to existing messages or forward emails.
Users can choose how much control Claude receives over these actions. By default, the assistant asks for permission before performing Gmail tasks.
However, users can allow Claude to complete selected actions without asking for approval each time. This option could make email management faster for regular tasks. The feature also includes controls for organizations. Team and Enterprise plan administrators can decide whether members can enable automatic actions.
Organization owners can restrict this capability if they do not want users granting Claude additional permissions. This provides organizations with greater control over AI-powered account actions.
Users can also disable these capabilities through the chat interface. Organizations can manage the settings through their Connector controls.
The update also expands Claudeโs abilities within Google Drive. The AI assistant can now share files stored in connected Drive accounts. Claude can also move files between locations in Google Drive. It can additionally send files to the trash when authorized.
The same approval system applies to Google Drive actions. Claude requests permission by default before carrying out these tasks.
Team and Enterprise administrators can control whether users can enable actions without repeated approval. This gives businesses another layer of oversight.
Despite the expanded capabilities, some restrictions remain. Anthropic says Claudeโs performance may vary when handling large Gmail inboxes. The Gmail integration also cannot access the contents of email attachments. Some advanced Gmail filters may not work correctly through the integration.
Google Drive also has certain limitations. Claude can extract text from supported Drive files. However, it cannot process images embedded in those files. It also cannot access comments or suggestions contained within documents.
The changes represent a broader expansion of AI assistants into everyday productivity tools. Claude can now perform more tasks instead of only providing information. The approval controls remain an important part of the update. They allow users and organizations to balance convenience with control.
For businesses, administrator settings can help manage how AI interacts with company data. Individual users can also turn off unwanted capabilities.
