Instagram has launched a new feature that can share your exact location with friends, family, and even followers. This update raised concerns among many users who prefer to keep their whereabouts private.
The latest Instagram Map shows your real-time location automatically. It does this whether you post or not. Although this feature is off by default, some users might accidentally enable it. This can reveal their location without their knowledge.
To control this feature, Instagram users can easily turn off location sharing. Here’s how to do it:
- Open Instagram and tap on Messages at the top right corner of your Feed.
- Tap the Map tab at the top of your inbox.
- Go to Settings in the top right corner.
- Select ‘No one’ to stop sharing your location completely.
- Tap Update to save your changes.
When your location is hidden, a red dot appears on your map. A blue arrow means your location is visible to someone. Instagram also allows you to hide your location from specific followers.
Just tap Settings > Options > Hide from… and select the accounts you want to exclude.
This new Instagram feature currently works only on the mobile app. Users are advised to check their settings to avoid unintentionally sharing their location. Privacy experts recommend reviewing these settings regularly for safety.
