A new study reveals that coral reefs function as natural timekeepers, regulating daily rhythms for nearby marine microbes.
Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem studied microbial populations above a coral reef in the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea. They compared these microbes to populations in open waters during both winter and summer.
The study found that reef waters consistently had fewer bacteria and microalgae than surrounding waters. This suggests coral organisms actively “clean” the water by consuming microbes.
Daily cycles linked to sunlight and coral metabolism were clear. Symbiodiniaceae, a family of coral symbionts, peaked around midday. These cycles were more noticeable than seasonal changes.
“This shows that coral reefs act as reliable timekeepers, guiding the daily patterns of marine microbes,” said the study authors.
The research highlights that sampling time is critical when studying reef ecosystems. A sample taken at noon can show very different microbial activity than one collected at midnight, even in the same season.
By understanding how coral reefs act as timekeepers, scientists can better monitor reef health. Daily microbial rhythms may serve as a sensitive indicator of environmental changes.
