Google Warns Users About Rising Threat of Fake VPN Apps

Google has issued a warning about a growing cyber threat posed by fake VPN Apps that trick users into installing malware disguised as legitimate virtual private network services. The advisory highlights the increasing use of such apps to steal sensitive data from unsuspecting users.

According to Googleโ€™s November 2025 fraud and scam advisory, cybercriminals are creating malicious fake VPN Apps and browser extensions that impersonate well-known VPN brands. These apps often appear functional and advertise strong security features, but secretly deliver harmful software such as info-stealers, banking trojans, and remote access tools.

The risk is especially high because many users trust VPN apps to protect their online anonymity. Once installed, these malicious apps can access private data, putting usersโ€™ personal information, credentials, and financial details at risk.

Google emphasized that even apps on official app stores are not completely safe. Users could unknowingly download fake VPN Apps thinking they are legitimate. To mitigate risks, Google recommends downloading VPNs only from trusted sources like the official Google Play Store. Verified apps often carry a โ€œVPNโ€ badge indicating authenticity.

Users are also advised to carefully review app permissions before installing any VPN. Legitimate VPNs typically only require minimal access to network functions. Apps asking for unrelated permissions, such as contacts, messages, or photos, should be immediately uninstalled. Avoiding third-party app stores and enabling Google Play Protect can further reduce exposure to malware.

Cybersecurity experts also recommend keeping devices updated and regularly checking installed apps for suspicious behavior. Users should be vigilant, especially when prompted to enter sensitive information or payment details in VPN apps.

The warning underlines the importance of exercising caution while downloading and using VPN services. By verifying sources, checking permissions, and relying on official channels, users can protect themselves from the rising threat of fake VPN Apps and other malicious software.
