Apple iOS 27 To Introduce New iPhone Handoff Feature

ISLAMABAD: Apple is preparing to introduce a new iPhone Handoff feature with iOS 27. The feature will allow users to switch between two iPhones while keeping the same phone number active.

Apple briefly revealed the feature during its WWDC 2026 keynote in June. However, the company did not provide detailed information about how the system would work.

The feature appeared on a slide highlighting several changes planned for Apple’s upcoming software updates. More details have now emerged about how iPhone Handoff will operate.

How iPhone Handoff Will Work

Users will reportedly be able to configure iPhone Handoff through the Cellular section in Settings. During setup, users can select a primary iPhone and a companion iPhone.

The primary eSIM will remain installed on the main iPhone. A separate companion eSIM will be provided for the second device.

This setup will allow the same phone number to move between both iPhones. Users will not need to manually transfer their primary eSIM whenever they switch devices.

Apple will manage the cellular settings through the primary iPhone. This arrangement is designed to make switching between devices more convenient.

Location sharing will also follow the iPhone currently being used with the active phone number. This means the location linked to the number can change with the active device.

The feature could be useful for people who regularly use two iPhones. It may also make switching devices easier during everyday use.

Carrier Support Required

The new feature will require both iPhones to run iOS 27. Users will also need support from their cellular carrier.

Reports suggest that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could be among the early carriers supporting the feature.

Apple has not yet confirmed a complete list of compatible carriers. Therefore, availability could vary depending on the user’s network provider and location.

The carrier requirement could limit access to iPhone Handoff when the new software becomes available. Some users may need to wait until their carrier officially supports the feature.

iOS 27 Release Expected Soon

iPhone Handoff has been undergoing beta testing alongside iOS 27. Apple has been testing the feature for around three months.

The company is expected to release the software update later this month. More information could be announced before the public rollout.

Apple may also confirm supported carriers and compatible devices closer to the release. Users should check these requirements before attempting to activate iPhone Handoff.

The new feature adds another option for users who regularly move between multiple Apple devices. Its availability will largely depend on carrier support and the rollout of iOS 27.
