Apple is working on a new feature that will allow iPhone Users to copy content from their devices and paste it directly onto Windows PCs. The planned functionality aims to make file and text sharing easier between Apple’s smartphones and Microsoft’s operating system.
Currently, Apple offers a similar feature through Universal Clipboard. This allows users to copy text, images, and other content on an iPhone and paste it onto a Mac connected to the same Apple ecosystem.
Microsoft has been seeking a similar experience for Windows users. The company submitted a request to Apple through the European Union’s interoperability system, which was introduced to comply with the Digital Markets Act.
According to reports, Microsoft made the request in March. The company asked Apple to provide a way for applications to access an iPhone’s clipboard continuously. This would allow content to move smoothly between paired devices.
Microsoft also requested that the feature should work even when the related application is not running in the foreground. The company argued that this would create a more seamless user experience.
In addition, Microsoft asked Apple to avoid requiring repeated permission requests whenever users copy and paste content. The goal is to reduce interruptions while maintaining privacy protections.
Apple responded to the request on June 26. The company confirmed that it is developing a new solution that will allow iPhone Users to copy and paste content directly between an iPhone and a Windows PC.
The upcoming feature will rely on Apple’s AccessorySetupKit framework. The same technology already supports third-party smartwatch notifications from iPhones.
Under the proposed system, users will only need to approve clipboard sharing once for each paired accessory. After granting permission, they can continue using the feature without repeated approval requests.
Apple described the project as a significant engineering effort. The company said the feature requires extensive development before it can be released to users.
According to Apple’s current plans, development is expected to continue until fall 2027. Beta testing will begin after the feature reaches the required level of readiness.
The initial rollout is expected to take place in the European Union. Apple has not confirmed whether the feature will also become available in other regions.
