OpenAI Cuts API prices for its GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Terra models following major improvements in system efficiency. The company said the lower prices became effective on July 30, just three weeks after the GPT-5.6 model family was made generally available on July 9.
The latest pricing changes apply only to GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Terra. GPT-5.6 Sol, the most advanced model in the lineup, continues to be offered at the same price.
According to OpenAI, the decision to reduce prices was made possible by improvements in its AI models, inference systems, hardware usage, production software, and context management. These upgrades helped lower operating costs while improving overall performance.
The biggest reduction is for GPT-5.6 Luna. The model now costs 80 percent less than before. Its input price has dropped from $1 to $0.20 per million tokens. The output price has also fallen from $6 to $1.20 per million tokens.
GPT-5.6 Terra has also received a price reduction. The input cost has decreased from $2.50 to $2 per million tokens. The output price has been reduced from $15 to $12 per million tokens, representing a 20 percent cut.
Meanwhile, GPT-5.6 Sol remains unchanged. The model continues to cost $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens.
The OpenAI Cuts announcement comes as the company continues to improve the efficiency of its AI infrastructure. OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol also played an important role in optimizing production systems. These improvements reduced serving costs by around 20 percent and increased token-generation efficiency by more than 15 percent.
Alongside the pricing changes, OpenAI has introduced a new Fast mode for GPT-5.6 Sol through its API. The company said this new feature replaces the earlier Priority Processing option.
Fast mode can deliver responses up to 2.5 times faster than the standard processing mode. While it costs twice the regular API price, OpenAI confirmed that the feature only increases processing speed. It does not change the model’s intelligence or response quality.
The company also clarified that ChatGPT and Codex subscription prices remain unchanged. Existing users will continue to pay the same subscription fees as before.
However, developers and businesses using GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-5.6 Luna through ChatGPT Work and Codex will benefit from the lower API prices. Since the models now cost less, they will consume fewer credits during usage.
