North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a strategic missile launch during a series of naval weapons tests aboard the newly built destroyer Kang Kon, according to state media. The tests were conducted as part of an evaluation of the warshipโs combat systems before it officially enters military service.
The missile launch took place on Friday and was reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Sunday. Kim observed the firing of a strategic cruise missile along with tests of anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air defense systems installed on the vessel.
According to KCNA, the trials were designed to assess the destroyerโs overall combat readiness. Officials tested target detection systems, information processing capabilities, integrated firepower controls, naval guns, automatic cannons, and electronic warfare equipment.
Before the missile launch, Kim received a detailed briefing on the destroyerโs weapons evaluation program. He then watched the cruise missile test and other live-fire demonstrations carried out by the navy.
State media reported that Kim praised North Koreaโs recent progress in military technology. He said the country should continue strengthening its defense capabilities and expand its ability to deter potential threats.
Kim also instructed military officials to complete all remaining trials of the Kang Kon within the next two months. After the evaluation is finished, the destroyer is expected to officially join North Koreaโs naval fleet.
The Kang Kon is one of North Koreaโs newest 5,000-ton destroyers. It belongs to the same class as the Choe Hyon, another warship that was commissioned into service late last month.
North Korea has announced plans to modernize its navy by adding more advanced warships over the coming years. Kim has directed officials to build two destroyers of this class every year for the next five years.
He has also outlined plans to develop larger 10,000-ton warships as part of the country’s long-term naval expansion strategy. These projects reflect Pyongyangโs continued investment in military modernization.
The Kang Kon had previously faced setbacks during its development. The vessel partially capsized during a launch ceremony last year and later underwent extensive repairs before returning for final testing.
The successful missile launch and weapons evaluations are seen as key steps toward bringing the destroyer into active service. Officials believe the tests will confirm the shipโs readiness for operational deployment.
North Korea has increasingly focused on strengthening its naval forces in recent years. Kim has previously described the navy as the weakest branch of the country’s armed forces and has called for major improvements.
Military analysts say the expansion of North Koreaโs naval capabilities is part of a broader defense strategy. The country continues to invest in advanced weapons systems, including cruise missiles, naval platforms, and air defense technology.
